Voltes V Background in the Philippines
The anime was directed by Tadao Nagahama and produced by Yoshiyuki Tomino, which was aired on Japanese television from 1977 to 1978, with a total of 40 episodes.
In the Philippines, the anime was first aired on GMA-7 in 1978 in English dubbing, but was discontinued due to “excessive violence” together with several programs. After the People Power Revolution in 1986, the anime has since been re-aired on several broadcasters, which had its resurgence when it was re-aired by GMA Network in 1999 in its primetime anime block.
The defunct anime channel HEROtv, owned by the media company’s previous competitor ABS-CBN, aired a redubbed Tagalog version in 2006, under the the name “Voltes V: Evolution”, which featured voices of local celebrities such as Dennis Trillo, Sandara Park and Michael De Mesa.
The media company also redubbed the show in 2017, featuring their own celebrity lineup including Derrick Monasterio, Bea Binene and Ken Chan.
